Title
Neurobehavioral effects of environmental pollution in primary school children and adolescents. (Research)
Abstract
Although it is well known that environmental pollution may negatively affect the neurobehavioral function, there exist many unresolved issues. For many toxicants including metals, it is unclear what level of exposure can be assumed safe. Moreover, the cognitive effects of some pollutants including traffic-related air pollution have not been extensively studied to date.
In this project, we investigate the neurobehavioral effects of environmental pollution in primary school children and adolescents. These populations may be particularly susceptible since their neurological system undergoes extensive developmental changes and they spend much time outdoors. In adolescents, we focus on three groups of pollutants: brominated flame retardants, toxic metals, and traffic-related air pollution. In primary school children, we study the short- and long-term effects of particulate matter.
