ERC

The European Research Council (ERC) supports individual researchers of any nationality and age to pursue frontier research in EU Member States or Associated Countries. It funds pioneering, cross-disciplinary and innovative projects, enabling investigators to establish or consolidate independent teams, as well as support established leaders.

ERC grants are awarded solely on excellence, operate on a bottom-up basis without set priorities, and are open to applicants worldwide, provided the host institution is in a Member State or Associated Country.

Pre-application procedure for external candidates and external grant holders

For external candidates and grant holders, Hasselt University's Directorate of Research, Library, and Internationalization (OBI) organizes a pre-screening to evaluate potential applications.

This pre-screening process is designed to give you a clear and supportive pathway for submitting your ERC grant application with Hasselt University as your host institution.

Our goal is to give you the best possible chance of success by:

  • Ensuring a good fit: We check that your research aligns with our expertise and that we have the necessary infrastructure to help your project thrive.

  • Providing formal commitment: A positive outcome from this pre-screening process means the faculty commits to offering you an academic position if your grant is awarded, giving you long-term career stability.

  • Offering tailored support: This process allows us to provide you with the specific guidance and institutional support you'll need to prepare a strong and successful application.

Following these steps allows us to work together effectively and maximise your chances of a successful grant application:

Step 1: Submitting Your Pre-Application

You can submit your pre-application form for an ERC grant at any time by sending it to research@uhasselt.be. The form and all relevant information are available here. Please note that cut-off dates (see above) based on the call deadlines apply.

First, OBI will conduct a formal eligibility check. Once this is complete, your pre-application will be forwarded to the relevant faculty for review.

Step 2: Faculty Review and Decision

The faculty will review your proposal to determine the following:

  • Strategic Fit: They will assess how your proposed research aligns with the faculty’s existing research and educational policy plans and the value it adds to their current research lines.

  • Infrastructure: They will check if the necessary infrastructure is available to support your project.

  • Financial Commitment: They will evaluate their ability to finance your position using their own resources, ensuring a sustainable position within the faculty or research institute.

During this stage, you may be invited for one or two informal meetings with the faculty, or you can request one yourself, to discuss your research proposal and the possibilities.

The faculty board will then inform OBI of their decision. A positive decision means the faculty commits to posting a vacancy for your research expertise if your project is granted.

Step 3: Support for Your ERC Application

If the faculty decision is positive, OBI will inform you and provide support for your ERC application. We will upload the necessary host institution letter after conducting final formal checks, including time commitment and budget assessment.

Step 4: Support interview training and next steps

If you are invited to a Step 2 interview for the ERC grant, Hasselt University will arrange an interview training and a mock interview.

If your project is granted and you confirm your interest in starting at Hasselt University, a job posting and a formal recruitment process will be launched for the position.

If the project is successful, we look forward to discussing your future at Hasselt University.
