CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Hasselt University’s Faculty of Law is proud to announce the fifth edition of the Young Legal  Researchers Conference, which will take place on Friday the 6th of December 2024. The  conference will be organised in person at the city campus of Hasselt University. The aim of the  conference is to bring together young researchers (primarily PhD and postdoctoral researchers) to  share, discuss and exchange ideas on their research with one another.

This conference reflects and discusses different transformations which the law is currently going  through as a result of major societal challenges, such as: the uncertain impact of US and EU  elections in 2024, the ongoing international armed conflicts, the developments in migration,  environmental crises, and emerging technologies. By addressing these challenges, the  overarching goal of the conference is to provide future-oriented legal insights to create a  sustainable and resilient pathway for the next generations. This not only includes the law as we  know it in the books, but also law in practice.

We invite researchers to submit an abstract from all areas of law, including interdisciplinary legal  research, to present their findings, critiques, ideas and solutions related to the following theme:  Strategizing for the future: Innovative legal research in the EU and beyond.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

Law in the books:

  1. Future-proofing legislation for the digital age: e.g. fast developing technologies;  fundamental rights; data and the law.
  2. Modern family dynamics and challenges for law: e.g. protection of vulnerable  persons; gender and family law; the fundamental right for private and family life.
  3. Protecting fundamental rights in economic and fiscal matters: e.g. protecting  fundamental rights in the economy; procedural guarantees in fiscal procedures; the  influence of globalization in economic and fiscal matters.
  4. Environmental crises and legal responses: e.g. ensuring a just transition towards the  future; environmental conservation and restoration; climate change law and litigation.

Law in action:

  1. Law and economics: e.g. corporate governance and finance; law and economics of  innovation; law and economics of intellectual property.
  2. Law and social sciences: e.g. democracy; rule of law; the influence of politics in law.
  3. Law and ethics: e.g. exploring the interplay between law and ethics; the protection of minorities; ethical legal practice.
  4. Law and exact sciences: e.g. scientific uncertainty and law; scientific approaches in legal procedures; science in courts.

Participants are welcome to submit topics outside the examples listed.

  • Abstracts should be uploaded through the abstract submission form.
  • Acceptance of the abstract will be communicated at the latest in the week of October 14th 2024.
  • It is possible to attend the conference without presenting.
  • Participation in the conference is free, but registration is necessary for all participants, both presenters and attendees. CALL FOR POSTERS

Would you like to present your legal research in a different way than by means of a PowerPoint  presentation or a paper...? Translate your research into a poster!

What?

Each accepted poster will be displayed during the conference. Furthermore, each participant will  have the opportunity to vote for their favourite poster. At the end of the conference day, the winner  of the poster contest will be announced and will earn eternal YLRC fame!

Why?

Legal research can be captured in a graphically attractive way. However, the use of posters is not  (yet) an established way of presenting and sharing research within legal studies. The YLRC team  wants to change this, since the creative and simplified presentation of (y)our research holds great  potential, and is a worthwhile skill to develop. Consequently, we encourage you to submit a poster  to present your research at our conference.

Who can participate, and how?

Any legal researcher, who would like to showcase their legal research in a smooth and attractive  way, can submit a poster in English starting from the 1st of May 2024 until the 8th of November  2024:

  • Please submit your poster before the 8th of November 2024 (as a JPEG or PDF) through the poster submission form.
  • In the poster submission form, you will be asked to add a short description of yourself, your  research and the content of the poster. This description will serve to support the poster and  will be displayed on the website.
  • Acceptance of the poster will be communicated at the latest in the week of November 18th 2024.
  • The presenters must bring their own poster in A1 format to the conference.
  • Participation in the conference is free, but registration is necessary for all participants, both presenters and attendees. Registration will open on the 6th of October and close on the 8th of November. Registration needs to happen in the conference registration form,  which can also be found on the website.
