Teaching assignment
You will have educational responsibilities for courses in the Master of Statistics and Data Science, where you are particularly responsible for the course Survival Analysis. In addition, you will also teach statistics courses in other bachelor’s and master’s programs at Hasselt University. You can also be involved in the organisation and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses.
Research assignment
It is expected that you will strengthen and/or extend (both from a methodological and an application area perspective) the current research themes at the Centre for Statistics in the field of epidemiology/biostatistics.
In addition, you will strengthen research in the field of Survival Analysis (and its applications), actively contributing through publications, scientific communication, project coordination, PhD supervision and grant writing, and research-based education in the Master of Statistics and Data Science.
You actively explore opportunities for valorization and exploitation of research results through various forms of knowledge and technology transfer, such as consultancy projects for (industrial) partners.
Your team
The Data Science Institute (DSI) unites researchers working in the broad field of data science across various research groups and faculties at Hasselt University, including researchers from statistics, computer science, mathematics, life sciences, and logistics. DSI's main objective is to facilitate a data-driven future. It supports and strengthens collaboration between various data science research groups at the university and serves as a single point of contact for external collaborations and consultancy.
The Centre for Statistics (CenStat), part of DSI, is seeking an excellent, enthusiastic colleague to strengthen and complement its research line in biostatistics/epidemiology. CenStat builds on over 30 years of research in biostatistics, statistical bioinformatics, and quantitative epidemiology. Together with DSI, CenStat offers a Master's program in Statistics and Data Science, an international and multidisciplinary program with four specializations: biostatistics, statistical bioinformatics, quantitative epidemiology, and data science.
Your talents

You have obtained a PhD in (bio)statistics (or equivalent)

You have an academic reputation for internationally competitive research in epidemiology/biostatistics, particularly in survival analysis, and/or have internationally recognized high potential to make a future impact.

You are able and interested in facilitating interdisciplinary interactions, both within the Data Science Institute and beyond.

You are involved in (international) collaborations.

You are cooperative and can work well in a team.

You have experience with various aspects of academic education: course coordination and organization, development of teaching materials, and supervision of practical projects and theses.

If you have experience with interdisciplinary education in statistics, including courses for students with a non-technical background, this is an added advantage.

If you have demonstrable experience in scientific consulting and contract research for industry, as well as other forms of technology transfer, this is an added advantage.

If you have demonstrable experience in preparing and securing scientific grants at the national/international level, this is a plus.

Dutch is the administrative language of Hasselt University. This implies that at the time of your appointment or within 5 years after your appointment as a member of the tenured academic staff, you must be able to demonstrate that your knowledge of Dutch is at least at CEFR level B2. If this is not yet the case at the time of your appointment, we offer you language lessons as support. You have a maximum of 5 years to achieve the required level.
When taking up a teaching assignment as coordinating lecturer or co-lecturer, you must always be able to demonstrate mastery of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1. Prior to this, Hasselt University can also support you in acquiring the required language skills.
Our offer for you
We will offer a parttime appointment (50%) as a lecturer or higher, which will lead to tenure. In case of a first appointment as a member of the academic staff, the Board of Directors of the University can decide on a temporary appointment for a period up to 3 years. This will lead to a permanent contract if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the party involved.
