The impact of COVID-19 on the economy

This programme of work examines the impact of COVID-19 on the economy. We look at the cost-effectiveness of the measures introduced to control the virus and estimate the burden on healthcare facilities in real-time.

Key activities include:

  • Applying statistical methods to estimate the burden of COVID-19 under various scenarios of spread and severity and the associated demands on healthcare resources (hospital beds, consultations).
  • Monitoring and analysing the impact of COVID-19 - and the measures put in place to control it - on financial markets and the wider economy, including aspects such as: productivity loss and changes in consumption.
  • Addressing the question: which measures are most effective in reducing cases, hospital admissions and deaths from COVID-19?
