I am professor of Computer Science, working in the Data Science Institute at Hasselt University.

In our research so far, we presented SpannerLib, a rule-based approach to Information Extraction (IE) that is shown to facilitate the orchestration of ML-based IE (including LLM-based approaches) in a declarative framework. SpannerLib achieves this flexibility by building on the formal framework of Document Spanners, which casts IE as relational querying. Thus, the framework allows to use the simplicity and popularity of logical querying to greatly simplify the development of solutions for text analysis, interfacing particularly with foundation models.
