Content

When you go about a poster presentation the wrong way, your poster will drown amid the hundreds of others. You, yourself will be utterly bored standing next to your poster twiddling your thumbs. But things can be different.

In this workshop, given by Toon Verlinden (The Floor is Yours), we will walk you through the steps on how to build a scientific poster through exercises, examples and short presentations. We will strive for a poster that is clear and engaging and will bring you and your audience the greatest value.

Among others, the workshop will discuss:

  • How to grab the attention? (Why should the audience listen to you?)
  • Telling your story in 1 minute.
  • How to structure your poster?
  • Getting a lengthy paper on a compact poster.
  • Examples of awesome research posters.
  • Where do you find professional images?
  • How to design a scientific poster.

Before the workshop, the participants receive a short assignment in which they prepare a pitch about their research. We will use it during the workshop so we can work with examples which are relevant for the audience. It also enables us to give some personal feedback.

Learning outcomes

After attending this training, participants should be able to...

  • pitch their research in a short and clear way,
  • know their key message and be able to use it to their advantage,
  • make a scientific poster that is clear and well designed, but still has the right content,
  • get more interaction and contacts out of scientific poster presentations.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

What others say

The trainer (Toon) was very enthusiastic and gave a lot of useful comments on both my poster and pitch. I learned a lot of new tricks to make a poster more appealing and focus on my key message.
