Content

On Wednesday, 4th June 2025, the Critical Junior Scholar Network is hosting another session. The CJS network is an interdisciplinary and inter-university network for young researchers who are (interested in) using critical theory or methodology in their work. It offers researchers the opportunity to discuss their work with like-minded others.

During this session, we want to focus on the place activism can or should have in critical research. Given the current political climate, we believe it is important to reflect on the importance of activism and the role researchers can and should play in this.
To explore this topic, we have invited two speakers to reflect on their trajectory as junior critical researchers and what being an activist academic looks like to them. The two speakers are:

  • dr. Samira Azabar (Radboud University), who specialises in resistance and the political agency of Muslims in Belgium and is a co-founder of BOEH! (Baas Over Eigen Hoofd)
  • dr. Leila Mouhib (ULB), who works on anti-racism and decolonisation within higher education and education as an emancipatory tool

Program:

At the start of the session, lunch will be provided by the network. Afterwards, at 13:00, we will start with the presentations:

  • Both dr. Samira Azabar and dr. Leila Mouhib will each give a one-hour presentation on their work and the topic of the activist academic
  • After a short break, we will have the opportunity to ask our questions to the presenters and have a roundtable discussion on the topic

Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to join for drinks. This will give us the chance to get to know each other in a more informal manner.
