We kindly invite you to join the ‘Meet the Jury’ seminar, featuring international speakers to discuss their research on 'Bird migration: ancient timers meet environmental change'.

This seminar will be given by:

  • Prof. Dr Barbara Helm (Swiss Ornithological Institute)

Bird migration has long inspired humans, but detailed information on this elusive behavior is hard to gather. Such knowledge is eminently important because migratory species decline, facing threats all along their spatio-temporal journey. In my presentation, I will focus on the temporal aspects of migration, assuming an annual-cycle approach but also addressing diel behavior. My emphasis is on inherited migration programs that have provided guidance for millennia, and that involve both physiological mechanisms and environmental factors. Worryingly, birds relying on such programs now face conditions that often no longer match those for which migration programs had evolved. I review environmental challenges and present examples of how birds have recently changed their migratory behavior.

This is a Meet the Jury seminar. Additional information on how to apply for these seminars can be found here.
