Method as critique: Two-day winter school on critical social science methodologies for studying power - 2023

How do we grasp the ways in which power operates through affect, the psychosocial or capitalist ideology? What kind of masculine and Eurocentric assumptions are embedded in methodological virtues such as “objectivity” and “systematization”? Are conventional social science methodologies able to fully capture embodied or repressed experiences of patriarchal violence? What measures are requisite for rendering Whiteness perceptible, considering its proclivity to operate beneath the guise of social neutrality?

This course introduces junior researchers to various critical methodologies for studying power.

Learning outcomes

After attending this winter school, participants will be...

• introduced to a variety of critical social science methodologies;
• able to apply these critical methodologies to an empirical object (e.g. case, interview transcript, document);
• able to reflect on the potential usefulness of these critical methodologies in relation to their own research.
