Content

This short course, given by dr. Noémie Aubert Bonn, introduces topics of publication ethics and provides ideas on how to increase transparency and openness in science.

Covered topics include authorship, research integrity (plagiarism, duplication, selective reporting), pre-registration, preprints, open access and open data, predatory publishers, publication metrics, and peer-reviewing.

The course comprises two sets of recorded theoretical sessions and two online discussion sessions to answer questions and to reflect upon the materials provided.

There are five editions, with 14 places available per edition.

Learning outcomes

After attending this course, participants will …

  • be aware of the issues affecting scientific publications,
  • understand the limits of current research evaluations using scientific publications as an indicator of success,
  • know of existing resources to increase the integrity of scientific publishing.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • personal effectiveness:
    • ethics & (research) integrity
    • responsibility
  • intellectual competences:
    • critical judgment
    • conceptual/synthetic thinking
  • academic research competences:
