Content

Are you a researcher struggling to create scientific posters or just want to do better? This workshop given by Toon Verlinden (The Floor is Yours), will help you take a step-by-step approach to creating a poster that has impact and really works. So you won't be twiddling your thumbs at your next poster session.

Among others, the workshop will cover topics as:

  1. How to structure a poster?
  2. What's the difference between an expert poster and a pitch poster?
  3. How do you fit a 30-page paper into a poster?
  4. How to get attention (Why should they listen to you?)?
  5. Examples of good research posters.
  6. Where do you find good images?
  7. How do you design a poster?

Before the workshop, participants will be given a short assignment to prepare a pitch about their research. We will then use this during the workshop to work with examples that are relevant to the audience. This makes it easier to give personal feedback.  Immediately following the workshop, additional feedback will be arranged to address participants' needs in creating their own poster.

Learning outcomes

After attending this training, participants should be able to...

  • pitch their research in a short and clear way,
  • know their key message and be able to use it to their advantage,
  • make a scientific poster that is clear and well designed, but still has the right content,
  • get more interaction and contacts out of my scientific poster presentations.

Competences

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:

  • academic research competences:
    • information management
    • publication skills
    • valorisation
  • interpersonal competences:
    • oral communication
    • presentation skills
    • written communication

What others say

The trainer (Toon) was very enthusiastic and gave a lot of useful comments on both my poster and pitch. I learned a lot of new tricks to make a poster more appealing and focus on my key message.
