Built in 1859, the old Hasselt prison originally replaced overcrowded city towers used for detention. Designed in a star-shaped layout, similar to other Belgian prisons of its time, it housed only 58 cells, which soon proved insufficient—leading to the construction of a larger facility.
Today, this historic site has been transformed into a vibrant part of UHasselt’s city campus, home to the Faculty of Law, research institutes, and public spaces. Its unique setting makes it an inspiring venue for our symposium, blending history with innovation.
