Prof. dr. ir. Liesbet M. Peeters is an Associate Professor at the Data Science Institute and the Biomedical Research Institute of Hasselt University. She completed her PhD in Bio-Engineering Sciences at KU Leuven in 2013 and has since built a research portfolio that spans bacteriophages, equine genetics, immunology in multiple sclerosis, and—more recently—data science, ethics, and systems change.

Although her work covers a wide range of topics, it is unified by one purpose: to use scientific and human insight to improve health and care systems. Prof. Peeters specialises in leveraging large-scale, real-world health data, with a particular focus on multiple sclerosis (MS). Her team develops and implements methodologies that address the technical, governance, and sociological challenges of scaling complex health datasets, enabling more timely, trustworthy, and equitable clinical decision-making.

Her interdisciplinary path reflects how she approaches problems: by following the questions that matter, applying her strengths where they can create the greatest impact, and connecting people and ideas across domains. She believes that while data can save lives, true progress requires both technical excellence and human wisdom.

Beyond her academic work, Prof. Peeters hosts The World of Liesbet, a podcast exploring purpose, courage, and what it means to become an agent of change. Through research, teaching, writing, and public engagement, she aims to make complexity accessible—and to weave diverse perspectives into one coherent story of improving the world.
