About the symposium

by invitation only

Join us as we share and discuss our research into the consequences of human-driven disruptions to Earth's natural systems, spanning impacts on animals, plants, humans, and ecosystems, and exploring how our work can contribute to improving planetary health. True to CMK's identity as an interdisciplinary institute, the programme draws from a diverse range of research approaches and disciplines.

The symposium is a forum to learn, exchange ideas, and connect; open to the entire CMK community, fellow UHasselt researchers, and our stakeholder network from academia, industry, and policy-making.

We look forward to welcoming you.

Topics explored during the symposium

  • How do environmental exposures affect human health and well-being?
  • How does human perception shape the way we value biodiversity across animals, parasites and plants?
  • What role do large-scale research infrastructures such as the UHasselt Ecotron play in advancing ecosystem research across Europe?
  • To what extent can biochar and circular agricultural practices contribute to sustainable soil management?
  • How can science support the safe management and recycling of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM)?
  • How can the Circular economy and environmental regulation enhance more sustainable resource use?

Panel discussion

The Science behind the Headlines

The evening programme features a panel conversation, exploring how our research connects to the public debate.

Experts from academia and science-communication will focus on the scientific evidence behind major environmental headlines and will reflect on how research findings are communicated, interpreted and sometimes misunderstood in society.
