From 25th to 28th of August, UHasselt, UGent and UAntwerp are jointly organizing the first Summer School on Bayesian Optimization, aimed at researchers in academia or industry who are new to this technique. The program contains lectures as well as hands-on programming, and a final use case to be solved in teams. The focus is on Bayesian Optimization (BO) with Gaussian Processes (GPs).
There are no specific prerequisites: a sound basis of mathematics/statistics and familiarity with Python should suffice. Participation is free of charge for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with a university; researchers from industry can register at a rate of 250 euros.
Each day consists of a morning session (AM, 3 hrs) and and afternoon session (PM, 3 hrs)
Day | Session | Description |
---|---|---|
Day 1: Introduction to Gaussian Processes (Ivan De Boi - UAntwerp) |
AM | Introduction to Gaussian Processes as a metamodel for BO: mathematical/statistical background of Gaussian Processes |
PM | Apply GP model fitting and model prediction to given datasets | |
Day 2: Bayesian Optimization with Gaussian Processes (Ivo Couckuyt, Sebastian Rojas-Gonzalez, Jolan Wauters - UGent) |
AM | Acquisition functions in BO |
PM | Multi-objective and Robust Optimization | |
Day 3: BO in Practice (Michael Pearce – Graphcore Research; Laurens Bliek – TU/e) |
AM | High-dimensional BO + BO in practice |
PM | Introduction to a real-life case study + teams start working on the case | |
Day 4: Case Study | AM (3hrs) |
Teams work on case study and prepare presentation |
PM (3hrs) |
Teams present their results |
The summer school is situated at the city center campus of Hasselt university. The buildings are conveniently located at a 10-15 minute walk from the train station.
As Hasselt is a small city, all hotels within the city center are at walking distance from the campus.
We recommend booking early to enjoy the best rates.
!!! We are currently at full capacity for the summer school. Any further registrations will be placed on a waiting list. !!!
!!! Applicants will be notified by July 25 if a spot becomes available. !!!
