CONCePT is short for combining efficient charge carrier transport with strong chiroptical activity - electroactive organic cations for chiral hybrid perovskites. This project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant).
Combining metal-halide frameworks with chiral organic molecules, chiral hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites enable direct detection of circularly polarized light (CPL) without external filters. Within CONCePT, we aim to design and synthesize novel chiral perovskites featuring optimized charge transport, enhanced chiroptical sensitivity, and superior operational stability through targeted molecular engineering and comprehensive structural, electronic, and spectroscopic characterization.
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged as highly promising materials for next-generation optoelectronic applications, including solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and photodetectors. Recently, chiral hybrid perovskites have attracted widespread attention due to their unique ability to interact directly with circularly polarized light (CPL), a property of light crucial for medical imaging, high-capacity optical communications, and light-driven electronics or spintronics.
Today, detecting CPL relies on bulky, complex, and expensive optical systems containing separate polarizers and filters. While chiral HOIPs offer a pathway toward compact, integrated polarization sensors, their practical implementation is currently hindered by low charge mobility, modest chiroptical performance, and insufficient environmental stability. The goal of CONCePT is to overcome these fundamental bottlenecks by establishing a combined synthetic and structural engineering framework that tailors the chiral organic building blocks to optimize charge transport, structural stability, and CPL detection sensitivity.
The project is funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
