Part 1: Ethical issues in vaccination: from development to fair distribution. (Wim Pinxten)
Vaccination against covid-19 generates multiple ethical issues, ranging from development of safe and effective vaccines to fair distribution. Given the variety of stakeholders involved, each with their respective interests, handling these issues is complicated. In this lecture, we will explore the ethical issues related to vaccination from a global perspective.
Part 2: Reaching the last mile: how to spread vaccines to remote areas in the world (Kim De Boeck & Stany Banzimana)
Access to immunization varies greatly across the world. In order to increase vaccine coverage, the required vaccines need to be able to reach the targeted population. However, in low- and middle-income countries, this often turns out to be a challenging task. This lecture elaborates on the characteristics and challenges inherent to vaccine supply chains in low- and middle-income countries. It starts with a general overview of the logistics and operations of childhood immunization supply chains in resource-constrained settings before covid-19. Next, the lecture zooms in on the childhood and covid-19 vaccine supply chains in Rwanda and Kenya.
