Synthesis of onion structured core-multishell particles for improved lithium sulfur batteries (Research)

Abstract

Lithium sulfur batteries can store high amounts of energy, around 10 times as much as current commercial lithium ion batteries. However, lithium sulfur batteries suffer from a very short cycle life. This is mainly due to polysulfide intermediates which are formed at the cathode, shuttle towards the anode, leading to loss of active material. In order to prevent this, core-single shell particles of sulfur wrapped in oxide, polymer, carbon etc. shells have been used, thus confining the polysulfides. However, the closed shell prevents a good contact with the electrolyte, thereby hampering the battery's function. This doctoral research focusses on chemical solution synthesis of onion structured core-multishell particles with the ultimate goal of improving the performance of lithium sulfur batteries.
