Title

PHotobiomodulation therapy for the management of cancEr therapy-reLated comPlications - HELP (Research)

Abstract

Cancer remains a major health problem. In Belgium in 2019, 71,651 new cases were registered. This figure is likely to double by 2040. Despite the advances in cancer treatment, most patients with cancer still struggle with many side effects that have a significant negative impact on their quality of life. With this project, we want to reach out to patients with cancer who suffer from the following complications: (1) Lymphedema of the arm after breast cancer or (2) hand-foot syndrome/skin reaction. There is an urgent need for a new, effective treatment for both complications. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is a non-invasive treatment based on the use of visible and/or (near) infrared light produced by an LED or laser device. This treatment has been used for many years to accelerate wound healing and reduce inflammation, pain and swelling. Our research group has already demonstrated that PBM can be used for various applications within assisted oncology care, including reducing inflammation of the oral mucosa and skin during chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. The goal of this project is to assess the effectiveness of PBM for two side effects related to cancer treatment: lymphedema of the arm and hand and foot syndrome/skin reaction
