Project R-14009

Title

Physical and electrochemical characterization of biochar in advanced battery technology (Research)

Abstract

This project investigates the potential of spent biomass resources as precursors to fabricate biocharbased electrode active materials in next-generation batteries. This concept is still far from the large commercial battery market because of the heterogeneous nature of biochars and the lack of profound insight into biochars' properties and their performance in batteries. We aim to understand how the biochar properties and the feedstock type affect the electrochemical performance of the next-generation batteries. In particular, this proposal aims to present the first approach to designing lithium-metal-free sulfur batteries based on biochar anodes, including an in-depth understanding of the behavior of the biochar-based electrodes from both experimental and physics-based modeling aspects. The outcome of this project would open a new paradigm to accelerate the production of green batteries.
