Project R-14028

Title

Blending education on safe nuclear decommissioning and sustainable waste management (Education)

Abstract

For almost 20 years, partners of the Cooperation of Higher Education on Radiological and Nuclear Engineering (CHERNE) network organise international training school in nuclear engineering topics like environmental radioactivity, nuclear waste management, industrial applications, nuclear medicine… . In this project, UHasselt in collaboration with other partners combines dissemination activities to different actors outside our CHERNE network but also to new training topics within our network. The new topics will focus on 'Decommissioning and nuclear waste management' which are important challenges in the future nuclear work field. The nuclear energy sector faces a transformation (win to cost model) and therefore requires future workers to have different skills. A lot of jobs will be available in the next years. Within blended pre and post training online activities and the 8 days on-site activities, interaction with stakeholders in the field (industry, regulators, researchers) and social interaction between the students (networking) will be strongly encouraged. Also, an SDG workshop will be included. In this way not only top technical skills will be trained but also durability competences will be acquired. We are confident that young engineers participating in international training schools will benefit from the networking for their whole career. The dissemination event to high school STEM teachers will be organised with different actors in order to offer a broader view on educational innovations via practical workshops (VR, SDG workshop, escape room design, communication, mathematical modelling, …) and interactions and good examples from invited speakers. Also here, the focus will be on learning with and from each other.
