Title

Onwards a resilient nursing workforce in Ethiopia: preparing newly graduated nurses for clinical practice. (Research)

Abstract

Background: In nursing, readiness to practice is the preparedness of new graduate nurses to competently perform the roles and responsibilities of a registered nurse. The competence of nurse graduates in Ethiopia has been a concern for years. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the difficulties new graduate nurses might face in transitioning from a student to a professional role. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess and address the transition problem (readiness) of new nurse graduates to improve healthcare outcomes and ensure a resilient healthcare workforce in Ethiopia. Methods: Institution based mixed cross-sectional study will be conducted in selected public universities and health care facilities in Ethiopia. The study participants will be nursing students, new nurse graduates, nursing educators, staff nurses, nursing leaders, patients, and other health professionals. Different sampling techniques, data collection and analysis methods will be applied as per the specific objectives of the study. The PhD project study will be divided into four phases as phase I: proposal development and course work, phase II: baseline assessment, phase III: Intervention and phase IV: end-line assessment and thesis write-up. The entire PhD work will tentatively run from January 2024 to July 2027. Keywords: Competence, Ethiopia, New graduate, Novice, Nursing, Practice, Readiness, Transition
