Title

LetS get fUnctional! FuNctional Status in pEople with intersItial lung disdease - the SUNSET study (Research)

Abstract

People with interstitial lung disease (ILD) experience a downward spiral of debilitating symptoms and functional status decline (i.e., difficulties performing daily activities required to meet basic needs, fulfil usual roles, and maintain health and well-being). Functional status decline is associated with an increased dependency on others, loss of productivity and premature death. It is also an important predictor of exacerbations, hospitalisations, readmissions, and mortality. The impact of functional status decline is, so overwhelming for individuals and society, that it has been recently recognised as an international top priority for patient-centered research in ILD. Nevertheless, person-centered ILD research and specifically into functional status is lacking. The SUNSET study is a long-term observational study which will address the knowledge gap on the functional status impairment in ILD. It will also provide tested measures to assess functional status comprehensively and a multi-dimensional index incorporating functional status measures to predict mortality in ILD.
