Title

Imagination in Action: A Practical Guide for Arts-Based Learning in the Classroom (Research)

Abstract

The aim of this valorization project is to make arts-based methods accessible to primary and secondary school teachers through a practical guide. Arts-based learning allows students to express their thought processes, insights, and experiences through art forms such as visual arts, music, dance, and drama (see Learning Point Note 'cultural education'). This approach provides a multisensory, layered way to explore themes, resulting in deep understanding and active participation in the learning process. Despite its benefits, arts-based learning has struggled to gain widespread adoption, as teachers often feel inadequately prepared to integrate these methods into their practice. The practical guide translates scientific insights into well-supported, accessible, and engaging learning activities that inspire education professionals to implement arts-based learning in primary and secondary education. The guide is divided into three parts: (1) concise information sheets summarizing scientific insights about arts-based learning, (2) concrete step-by-step plans for incorporating three arts-based methods—photovoice, digital storytelling, and future headlines, and (3) reflection cards that help education professionals evaluate and enhance arts-based learning within their schools. The practical guide will be available both digitally and in a flexible, loose-leaf format, ensuring that relevant information can be easily and quickly accessed and utilized.
