Title
Evaluating sustainability competencies among Hasselt University students and schools (DEUSS) (Education)
Abstract
DEUSS was created by integrating the ideas submitted by the three Hasselt University schools during the first phase of the IOP call 2025. The common goal of these three ideas is to (further) stimulate and evaluate sustainability competencies among students. We start from the Hasselt University competency framework, which is contextualized for several programs from the three Hasselt University schools involved.
First, we stimulate sustainability competencies among students by having them co-create interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary learning resources and activities for secondary school students. Students from the School of Educational Studies (SES) are responsible for the subject-specific didactic approach, while students from the School of Social Sciences (SSW) and the School of Mobility Sciences (SvM) are responsible for the subject-specific content. The teaching materials and activities are co-created with a view to organizing a Limburg Day for Sustainability and Global Citizenship for secondary school pupils in collaboration with teachers who provide relevant themes, in order to ensure the civic character of this IOP.
Secondly, we are developing an evaluation tool using a participatory methodology with students and teachers to measure whether the four contextualized competencies from the Hasselt University competency framework are being effectively achieved. Finally, the process that the three Hasselt University schools are undergoing is being translated into learning modules for teachers from other Hasselt University faculties.
