Title
Transforming Epilepsy Management in Haut-Katanga: Education and Data-Driven Solutions (Education)
Abstract
Epilepsy is a major yet neglected public health challenge in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where an estimated 500,000 people live with the condition and the treatment gap exceeds 67%. The burden is particularly high in Haut-Katanga, where stigma, limited healthcare capacity, and insufficient epidemiological data hinder effective management. This project aims to strengthen epilepsy care in Lubumbashi and Kipushi through three complementary strategies: capacity building of healthcare providers, large-scale community awareness campaigns, and the development of a sustainable epilepsy registry. Training programs will equip more than 500 healthcare professionals with the skills necessary for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Community outreach in schools, markets, and religious institutions will address misconceptions, reduce stigma, and promote health-seeking behavior, with over 118,000 individuals expected to be reached. In collaboration with Hasselt University, the project will establish a robust epilepsy registry to support evidence-based decision-making, research on infectious disease links, and long-term policy development. By integrating education, community engagement, and data generation, the initiative contributes to sustainable improvements in epilepsy care and aligns with SDG3, SDG4, and SDG10.
