Title

Precision rehabilitation in individuals with hip osteoarthritis after total hip arthroplasty. (Research)

Abstract

Hip osteoarthritis is a complex degenerative disease of the hip joint and is one of the biggest causes of disability in the elderly population. In the end stage, total hip arthroplasty is performed. However, 23% of patients still experience chronic pain and 30% of patients report reduced activity in daily life after total hip arthroplasty. Because of these long-term limitations and the heterogeneity of the disease presentation, a personalized treatment plan is necessary. Therefore the first aim of this research is to identify preoperative clinical phenotypes (based on biopsychosocial factors and movement quality) and their prognosis for outcomes in pain and disability in patients with hip osteoarthritis undergoing total hip arthroplasty. The second aim is to evaluate how rehabilitation is personalized based on current literature. The findings will be evaluated by a modified Delphi panel of experts and patients opinion. These components will be synthesized into a framework for precision rehabilitation in patients with osteoarthritis undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Finally, a pilot RCT will be conducted to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework.
