Who is missing from your scientific story? Could your communication style be building walls instead of bridges?

This workshop, brought to you by SciMingo, introduces inclusive science communication in the context of a superdiverse society. Participants explore what inclusive communication means for research communication, focusing on clarity, recognisability, and avoiding stereotypes in language, framing, and imagery. The session approaches inclusivity as a circular process in which researchers and audiences influence one another, and reflects on positionality, power, and the construction of “in-” and “out-”groups in science communication practice.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • be able to recognise how assumptions about audiences influence the way they communicate about their research;
  • have insight into inclusive science communication as a circular, relational process rather than one-way transmission;
  • be aware of common exclusion mechanisms in research communication, including language, framing, and implicit stereotyping;
  • know about strategies to adapt research communication to diverse audiences without compromising scientific integrity;
  • have increased awareness of ones own position as a researcher and communicator, and how this shapes interaction with different publics.

Methods

The workshop use interactive and reflective work formats, including think-pair-share, creative thinking exercises, short plenary inputs and guided group discussion.
