The power of neurodiversity in the workplace
This session provides insights, inspiration, and practical guidelines for anyone who wants to embrace neurodiversity as a strength in the academic / professional world.
Programme:
11:30-12:15 Keynote: The power of neurodiversity in (academic) careers
In this lecture by Prof. Eline Jammaers (Business Economics), we explore the value of neurodiversity in the workplace, with a particular focus on academic environments. We start with a clear explanation of key concepts and facts about neurodiversity, followed by a discussion of the social model of disability as a foundation for the neurodiversity paradigm. We debunk some common myths and highlight the unique talents that different neurodivergent conditions (such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia, Tourette's or dyscalculia) entail. We draw inspiration from well-known historic and contemporary inventors artists and entrepreneurs. But beyond that ‘innovation potential’, how can neurodiversity also provide a competitive advantage for organisations? We conclude with concrete tools and strategic recommendations for creating a culture in which all employees, neurodivergent or not, can realise their full potential.
12:15-12:25 Break
12:25-12:45 Personal stories
Two people with ‘labels’ talk about what their labels mean to them and how they either hinder or empower them in the workplace (and beyond). Their story aims to counter any stereotypical ideas, as well as to provide recognition and acknowledgment to employees within our organization who may not (yet) feel comfortable being open about their label or diagnosis, and most importantly: about their needs.
12:45-13:00 Q&A
At the end of the session, all three speakers will be available for questions.
