BOF-TT human rights (Research)

Abstract

Stijn Smet is Assistant Professor of Constitutional Law at Hasselt University and has been awarded the BOF tenure track label in recognition of his research activities. His research expertise is situated in the domains of European human rights law and comparative constitutional law. His research focuses, in particular, on the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, conflicts between human rights, the right to freedom of religion in comparative perspective, and the role of tolerance and neutrality in law. He has a growing interest in constitutional resilience against democratic erosion. He supervises five PhD students (as of 2021) and is a PI on the multidisciplinary iBOF-project Future-proofing Human Rights: Developing Thicker Forms of Accountability (2021-2024). As of 2021, he is co-editor-in-chief of Tijdschrift voor Mensenrechten and of the Strasbourg Observers blog.
