Title

Certainty-based marking' in the broader context of 'confidence-based learning': stimulating thinking and improving knowledge assessment (Education)

Abstract

In activating blended education, digital assessment has taken on a more prominent role. When using multiple-choice questions, it is important to distinguish between knowledge and luck. Correcting for luck can be done by using degrees of certainty: students have to choose an answer option and indicate how sure they are of their answer. Using degrees of certainty leads to higher-order thinking skills. To this end, the use of certainty degrees should be seen as part of 'confidence-based learning'. Students are encouraged to search for information in the presence of uncertainty.
