What?

On the initiative of the Fund Generet, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, the Generet Award for Rare Diseases will be granted to support a research project in the field of rare diseases.

The Fund wants to support research on rare diseases to better understand the processes (causes and mechanisms) underpinning rare diseases and translate fundamental discoveries into better prevention, diagnosis or treatment for patients. For this call, rare cancers and rare adverse drug events will not be taken into account.

Amount: 1.000.000 € over 4 years. A first installment of 500.000 € will be credited for 2 years. The second installment of 500.000 € will be subjected to the positive evaluation of a mid-term scientific, financial and communication report

Research can encompass all stages from "bench to bedside". The research project must be conducted in Belgium.

Valuable assets:
  • Translational approach: referring to a research methodology integrating a basic science approach as well as clinical considerations.
  • Multidisciplinarity: referring to the use and application of different scientific disciplines as a substantial element of the research methodology.
  • Multicentric cooperation: referring to the close collaboration with centers of excellence located in Belgium or abroad. In case of international collaboration, the researcher working in the Belgian Institution must remain the coordinator of the project. However, up to 30% of the Grant’s amount could be outsourced for supporting international or intranational expenses (personnel costs and running costs) including the private sector if they charge at cost price.

 

Who?

The call is open to experts in rare disease pathologies and researchers with a track record in more common pathologies who are interested in rare diseases and wish to conduct further research or accelerate research in this particular field.

Eligibility rules pertaining to the applicant:
  • Applicants must be internationally established investigators, with outstanding scientific achievements and multiple seminal contributions in the field of rare diseases or with outstanding scientific achievements and multiple seminal contributions in common diseases, who want to focus on research in rare diseases and who can rely on a team that has the necessary competencies and expertise to carry out research in this field. 
  • The applicant must have a scientific seniority of min. PhD + 6 years;
  • The applicant must be affiliated to a Belgian University or a Belgian University Hospital or an eligible Research Institute;
  • The applicant must provide evidence of his/her affiliation to his/her institution until December 31, 2027 and not reach the retirement limit during the project.

Application?

Applicants will undergo a two-steps application procedure:

Deadline submission pre-proposals: April 3rd 2023 (midnight)

Deadline submission full proposals: July 10th, 2023 (midnight)


Pre-proposals as well as proposals have to be submitted electronically in English using the online application system and using the pre-proposal form and the full proposal form.
