As a civic university, Hasselt University recognizes AI as a driving force for innovation and social progress. We believe it is our responsibility to educate students and staff on the critical, ethical, and responsible use of AI tools. Additionally, we aim to contribute to the development of reliable AI systems.
New AI applications are evolving rapidly. As a result, creating a comprehensive policy is challenging. However, we have established a framework for the use of generative AI within the university context. This framework emphasizes large language models (LLMs) and focuses on three core areas: teaching, research, and internal organization, which includes administrative and operational processes.
There are now numerous AI tools available, and new ones are being added at a rapid pace. To help you stay informed and ensure that you are using safe tools, you can refer to our regularly updated AI-tools list.

UHasselt aims to empower every staff member and student to use AI in a responsible, safe and effective way.
For staff (teaching staff, researchers and ATP), a growing range of training opportunities is available to develop AI skills and applications, including targeted sessions on specific themes and domains (e.g. using GenAI for administrative tasks but also in education and research).
