Environmental technology

Nuclear decommissioning and immobilisation of nuclear waste

Nuclear decommissioning:

Nuclear waste:

  • The research focusses on the immobilisation of solid and liquid radioactive wastes using new types of cementitious binders (alkali activated materials).

More information on ongoing and performed research project and published research papers can be found via the research profile of Prof. dr. Wouter Schroeyers and Prof. dr. Sonja Schreurs

Characterisation, treatment and reuse of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM)

The research focusses on:

  • Reuse of NORM in new types of cementitous binders (Inorganic polymers, Alkali Activated Materials, Geopolymers,...) and concretes
  • Safe management of NORM from specific industries (geothermal energy, phosphate industry,...)
  • Radiological and chemical analysis of NORM residues and construction materials:
    • Gamma spectroscopic analysis
    • Radiological and chemical leaching analysis
    • Radon exhalation/emanation analysis

Adsorption (Activated carbon from pyrolysis/activation) and desorption of (radiological) pollutants
