Erasmus+ Grant: financial support for your adventure abroad
The Erasmus+ grant helps cover your living and travel expenses, making an international experience financially possible for everyone.
What does the grant consist of?
How does the funding work?
Please note: Erasmus+ funding is capped at a maximum of 12 months per study cycle and is subject to UHasselt budget availability. If a grant is awarded and a retrospective check reveals prior Erasmus+ participation in the same cycle, UHasselt reserves the right to reduce the grant to the remaining eligible timeframe or cancel it entirely if the 12-month limit has been met.
How and when is the grant paid? (70% / 30% rule)
Following the official Erasmus+ regulations, your grant will not be paid in one single lump sum, but in two installments:
First installment (70%): Once you have signed your Grant Agreement and completed all required pre-departure administration (such as a fully signed LA(T), the OLS language assessment, if applicable and a final approval of the faculty), you will receive an advance payment of 70% of your total allocated grant. This payment is typically processed shortly before or at the start of your mobility period.
Final installment (30%): The remaining 30% will be paid after your return. This final balance is calculated and released only after you have submitted all required end-of-mobility documents (such as your Certificate of Attendance and other required documents) and completed the mandatory online EU Participant Survey.
Please note: The final 30% installment is a calculation based on your actual, confirmed dates of your study/traineeship abroad. If your stay was shorter than originally planned, the final balance will be adjusted accordingly.

The travel allowance is based on the distance between the UHasselt campus and the host institution. You can use the distance calculator to calculate your travel allowance. If you travel to and from your host institution sustainably and collectively (route home - host city), your travel allowance is higher (see below). Examples of sustainable and collective transport are travelling by bus, train, and carpooling with fellow students,... Using an electric car only qualifies as sustainable travel if you carpool with fellow students. If your host institution is less than 500 km from the UHasselt campus, you are expected to travel sustainably. Erasmus+ and UHasselt also encourage green travel for longer journeys.
