Master student

Who is considered a Master student?

At Hasselt University, you are considered a master student if you are formally enrolled in a master’s degree programme to obtain a master's diploma.

Essentially, this means you are a degree-seeking student who lives and studies in Belgium for the duration of your programme.

Exchange Students

Who is considered an Exchange student?

At Hasselt University, an exchange student is a temporary visitor who comes to study with us for a short period (usually one semester or one full academic year) as part of an official agreement with their home university. Unlike regular students, exchange students do not graduate from UHasselt—they transfer the credits they earn back to their home institution.

Note: Your home university must officially nominate you to our International Office before you can register.

PhD Students

Who is considered a PhD student?

At Hasselt University, a PhD student (also called a doctoral candidate or PhD researcher) is someone who is formally registered to conduct advanced, independent scientific research under the guidance of a university supervisor (promoter). The ultimate goal of a PhD student is to write and publicly defend a doctoral thesis to earn the title of Doctor.

Guests

Who is considered a Guest?

At Hasselt University, your application and registration process depend entirely on the goal of your stay. If you do not fit 100% into our standard categories—Master student, Exchange student, or PhD student—you will likely be registered as a guest. Please note that we only officially register guests if your stay at UHasselt is longer than 1 month.
You fit into this category if you are staying for more than a month and match one of these examples (non-exhaustive list):

  • Visiting researchers: International scholars, visiting scholars, or predoctoral visitors.
  • Project participants: Visitors coming to UHasselt as part of a VLIR-UOS project (who are not registered as Master or Exchange students).
  • Individual collaborators: Academic visitors working on personal collaborations with individual UHasselt researchers.
  • Specialisation students: Individuals registered specifically for a specialization track.

If you are visiting UHasselt for less than a month, you do not need to register through this process. Instead, please contact your UHasselt host, promoter, or contact person directly. They will arrange a temporary registration for you at the faculty level. Still unsure? If you are in doubt about which category you belong to, please contact us, we are happy to help you find the right track!
