Programme of the day
- 13h00: Lecture The Thoughtful Hand
- This presentation will explore needlework, spinning and weaving as forms of thinking. I will look at representations of sewing women (highly popular in the Dutch Republic) as images of female interiority, as well as at works made of textile, past and present (such as by Hannah Ryggen and Anni Albers). My argument on the interrelation of hand and mind is based on Martin Heidegger's notion that thinking should be understood as a form of craft making.

About Hanne Grootenboer
Hanneke Grootenboer is Professor of Art History and Chair at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Her scholarship focuses on intersections of early modern art, literature and (contemporary) philosophy, addressing topics such as intimacy, interiority, affect and miniaturization.
Her recent publications include The Rhetoric of Perspective (Chicago UP, 2005), Treasuring the Gaze (Chicago UP, 2012, Kenshur Prize for best book on interdisciplinary studies), the co-authored Conchophilia: Shells, Art, and Curiosity in Early Modern Europe (Princeton UP, 2021, paperback 2023) and The Pensive Image: Art as a Form of Thinking (Chicago UP, 2021, paperback 2023, Outstanding Monograph Prize of the American Association of Aesthetics).
She is currently working on a book on art, craft and thought.
